On Sunday, June 5, 2011 the AHEPA Mother Lodge Chapter No. 1 Educational Foundation, Atlanta, GA celebrated its 25th Anniversary. Over 250 family members, friends, and members of the AHEPA family attended the event. The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of scholarships totaling over $50,000 to 51 students from the greater Atlanta area. Since 1986 over $460,000 in scholarship money has been given to students to help them with their college education.
Opening remarks were made by Tom Kantsios, chairman of the AHEPA Educational Fund. Tom was recognized for 25 years of service as Chairman of the Scholarship Fund, founded in 1986. Also recognized were George Skoufis, Dr. George Patterson, Dr. Pandeli Durbetaki, and William Marianes for their 25 years of service on the board.
Board member Dr. Victor Polizos, spoke about the 15th Anniversary of the TRIBUTE statue project which was AHEPA’s gift to the city of Atlanta for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. Sponsored by Hellenes and Philhellenes from around the world, the statue resides in Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta.
