2013 AHEPA Mid-Winter Conference

Dear AHEPA Family,

Knoxville is pleased to host once again the AHEPA District One Midwinter Conference this upcoming March 1-3, 2013. For those of you who attended the Midwinter Conference in Knoxville in 2010, we hope fond memories of that weekend will entice you to return for this year's conference. For those of you who will be making your first trip to Knoxville for a midwinter conference, we equally look forward to welcoming you and hosting you and your families for a relaxing and fun-filled weekend of activities and fellowship.

Two important deadlines to keep in mind as you make your plans for March 1-3. First, hotel reservations must be made by February 1 in order to obtain the AHEPA rate for the weekend at the downtown Knoxville Hilton. We have negotiated a very competitive rate - $99/night plus free parking - that will only be available through February 8, so please be sure to go ahead and make your hotel reservations now. Second, the deadline for submission of ads for the conference commemorative album book is February 1. We encourage all of our AHEPA and Daughters chapters, as well as our District AHEPA housing corporations, to purchase ads to support our local chapter's efforts to host this year's midwinter conference and to continue our charitable outreach efforts at our church, community, and diocese level. Please keep these deadlines in mind as you make your plans.

All of this information is contained in the flyers accompanying this welcome letter. Please make every effort to forward the flyers to everyone in your chapters as well as others who may be interested in attending. We are hard at work planning social events, together with the midwinter basketball tournament, and once again the highlight of the weekend will be our Saturday night Apokreas dinner/dance celebration that our AHEPA chapter hosts annually for our local church community with plentiful food and live Greek-American band entertainment.

We look forward to seeing everyone in Knoxville on March 1-3 of this year!

Invited guests included members of the Daughters of Penelope, spouses of the honorees, and individuals interested in joining the local AHEPA chapter.

Chapter president, William Simitses opened the evening by welcoming everyone. He presented membership pins to the AHEPA brothers, beginning with 5 year pins and concluding with 40, 45, and 50 year pins. Brother William Simitses, who served as chapter president for two years, was recognized and thanked for his service. This year he was also the recipient of the chapter AHEPAN of the YEAR award. Brother Ted Kipreos was recognized and thanked for his two years of service as AHEPA District #1 Governor.

The second half of the evening, “Celebrating Service” honored the history and service of the AHEPA Mother Lodge #1 Educational Fund. Scholarship board member, Dr. Victor G. The Fund, established in 1987 with a donation by the Mother Lodge Chapter of $5,000 has grown to a Fund that includes 38 Endowments of families of Atlanta AHEPANS, and now has close to $1,000,000. Since 1987, 510 total scholarships have been awarded totaling $471,950. Five present members of the board were on the original board and were honored for serving for 25 years. They are Thomas S. Kantsios, who served as chairman for 25 years, Dr. Pandeli Durbetaki, who served as treasurer for 25 years, William B. Marianes, who served (and continues to serve) as legal counsel for 25 years, Dr. George P. Patterson, and George Skoufis. All continue to serve on the board today.

The members were each honored with a biographical review of their lives and especially their service to the local, district and national level of AHEPA. They were each presented with a plaque of gratitude from the local chapter. In addition to their service, these members have also established endowments in their families’ names as well. Congratulations again Tom, Pandeli, Bill, George, and George. Continued wishes for many more years of service, and to all members who were honored on this evening.

Anyone needing information about the AHEPA Mother Lodge #1 Educational Fund can contact chairman of the fund, Dr. Pandeli Durbetaki.
